Site contract for new Bonne Bay Health Care facility

Rick Woodford, Minister of Works, Services and Transportation, and Charles Furey, MHA for St. Barbe, today announced the awarding of a site preparation contract for the new Bonne Bay Health Care facility.

The contract, valued at $445,912.50, has been awarded to Midland Construction Limited of Pasadena and will include site grading and servicing. Work will commence immediately and is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

It is anticipated that the main construction contract for the new facility will be awarded in the Spring of 2000. Construction of the main facility is expected to be completed in March of 2001 with occupancy to occur by mid-June of 2001.

The new Bonne Bay Health Care facility will replace the existing 18-bed wooden facility located in the centre of the town of Norris Point. It will be constructed at an estimated cost of $8.5 million and financed through the Newfoundland Government Fund Limited. Medical equipment and furniture will be funded by Works, Services and Transportation.

Mr. Furey said he was extremely pleased that a physical start is now about to be made on the site for the new regional integrated facility to serve the needs of the people who live in the Bonne Bay catchment area.

"I am sure this news will be well received by all of the people to be served by what will be a first class health care facility," said Mr. Furey. "This ultra modern health care project will offer a diverse range of health services and its early construction, completion and operation is a priority of government."

Specifically, the new centre will include eight acute care beds; palliative care bed; 13 long-term care beds; respite care bed, outpatient clinics; 24-hour emergency service with after hours emergency coverage provided by nursing; diagnostic imaging; laboratory; rehabilitation and health and community services.

The total building area is approximately 3225 metres. The new facility will be operated and maintained by the Western Health Corporation.

Mr. Woodford said his department will remain involved during all construction phases of the facility to ensure that the interests of the Western Health Care Corporation and the Department of Health and Community Services in obtaining a quality facility are met.
