Contract awarded for Coastal Labrador services

Rick Woodford, Minister of Works, Services and Transportation, announced today the awarding of a contract to CanShip Limited of St. John's for the provision of a passenger/freight vessel and a container vessel for coastal Labrador services.

The contract is valued at $8,479,800.

Mr. Woodford said the contract is for a two-year period with a government option to extend for an additional year. The previous contract for this service expired in December of 1998.

The two CanShip vessels will operate from Lewisporte to Nain, calling on all ports in between.

Mr. Woodford said he anticipated a start date of June 10 from Lewisporte. He said that, barring ice conditions, there will not be any delays to marine services to and from Labrador.
