The following is being distributed at the request of Marine Atlantic:

Atlantic Freighter out of service

Marine Atlantic's MV Atlantic Freighter has been taken out of service due to a ruptured water tank and some associated structural damage. The ship had been operating opposite MV Caribou in winter service between North Sydney and Port aux Basques.

Marine Atlantic has taken immediate steps to make the idle MV Joseph and Clara Smallwood ready for service as quickly as possible. The Smallwood had been undergoing maintenance, but the project has now been terminated and will be completed at a later date.

The Smallwood is expected to be ready for service by Friday of this week. Until that time, the Caribou will operate on an accelerated load-and-go basis, in an effort to keep traffic current.

Passengers holding reservations are asked to keep in touch with Marine Atlantic for latest sailing information.
