Volleyball championships this weekend

The last provincial high school championships of 1999 will take place this coming weekend in four centres across the province. Musgrave Harbour and Lumsden School will be the site of volleyball action for the second consecutive weekend. Gill Memorial and Lumsden School are the co-hosts for the Boys A volleyball championships. Ten teams will compete for the championship banner.

Division A will be played at Musgrave Harbour and will feature the co-hosts Gill Memorial, St. Peter's Academy (Westport), St. Anne's All Grade (Conne River), Ecole St. Anne (LaGrand Terre) and Amos Comenius (Hopedale). Playing in Division B at Lumsden will be the co-host, E.J. Pratt (Brownsdale), A.R. Scammell (Change Islands), St. Bernards All Grade and Random Island Academy. Both venues start play at 11 a.m. Friday. The round robin action will continue through to Saturday morning. The cross overs and championship match will be played at Gill Memorial Saturday afternoon.

Canon Richards High in Flower's Cove and St. Augustine's in Plum Point are the hosting schools for the 2A girls event. Eight teams will face off in the two division round robin tournament. Competing in one division will be Mountain View Academy (Roddickton), Grandy's River Collegiate (Burnt Islands), St. Augustine's and King Academy (Harbour Breton). Rounding out the tournament in the other division will be Northshore Collegiate (Northern Bay), Riverwood Academy (Gander Bay), St. Michael's (Arnold's Cove) and Canon Richards High. The first match gets under way at 10 a.m., Friday and round robin play will continue through to 12 noon on Saturday. The top teams from each division will meet in semi-final action Saturday afternoon culminating in the bronze and gold medal matches.

Both the 3A boys and 3A girls volleyball championship will be hosted by Menihek High in Labrador City. Island tournaments were held to determine which team from the island would qualify for the provincial. The winning island boys team was Bishop White All Grade from Port Rexton. The winning girls team was from Pasadena Academy. Both island teams will compete against Goose High School from Happy Valley-Goose Bay and the host, Menihek in a double round robin tournament. Matches get under way 9 a.m. Friday and continue throughout Friday and Saturday. The top team from the round robin competition receives a bye to the championship with the other two teams playing off in a semi-final game. The championship games are set for 3 p.m.

Carmanville School will host the 10 team boys 4A championships. The host school will compete in Division A along with Clarenville Intergrated, Ascension Collegiate (Bay Roberts), Pearce Regional High (Burin) and Queen Elizabeth Regional High (Foxtrap). Rounding out the field in Division B will be Exploits Valley High (Grand Falls-Windsor), Lewisporte Regional High, Elwood Regional High (Deer Lake), Herdman Collegiate (Corner Brook) and Bishop's College (St. John's). The tournament will start Thursday at 5 p.m. with four matches scheduled that day. The championship games will be played Saturday afternoon.

The presentaiton of medals, Keyin Sportsmanship Award and championship banner will follow immediately after the championship match. All provincial high school tournaments are sponsored by the School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers Association and Keyin College.
