The following is being distributed at the request of the Newfoundland and Labrador High School Athletic Federation:

Provincial High School Girls Volleyball Championships this weekend

Three provincial champions will be crowned this coming weekend in high school girls volleyball. The High School Athletic Federation will hold the A, 2A and 4A tournaments, sponsored by Keyin College and the School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers Association.

Gill Memorial Academy in Musgrave Harbour and Lumsden School Complex will be co-hosting the Girls A championships. Ten teams will compete in two divisions to qualify for playoff action. Division A will be played at Lumsden and will consist of the following teams: Christ the King (Rushoon), St. Marks All-Grade (Kings Cove), St. Boniface (Ramea), E.J. Pratt (Brownsdale) and the host, Lumsden. Seven matches will be played on Friday beginning at 11:30 a.m. The remaining three round robin games will be played on Saturday morning. Gill Memorial Academy will host the schools playing in Division B. Competing against Gill Memorial will be St. Peter's Academy (Westport), Cottrels Cove Academy, Mountain View Academy (Forteau) and Peenamin McKenzie (Sheshatshui). Matches once again get under way at 11:30 a.m. and conclude on Saturday morning. The semi-final games, bronze and gold medal games will be played Saturday afternoon at Lumsden School.

The 2A Girls Volleyball tournament is also being co-hosted by Grandy's River Collegiate and LeGallais Memorial. The eight-team tournament gets under way at both schools at 10 a.m. Friday. Teams playing at Grandy's River Collegiate in Burnt Island include the host, St. Michael's from Arnolds Cove, Holy Trinity from Norman's Cove and Glovertown Regional High. Competing against Legallais at Isle Aux Morts will be Roncalli from Port Saunders, King Academy from Harbour Breton and J.C. Erhardt from Makkovik. Cross overs and championship games are scheduled for Saturday morning at Grandy's River Collegiate.

Roncalli Central High in Avondale and Ascension Collegiate in Bay Roberts are the host schools for the 4A Girls Volleyball tournament. Eight teams will be competing for the championship banner. Division A will play its games out of Roncalli and will see competition from the host, Queen Elizabeth Regional High (Foxtrap), Regina High (Corner Brook) and Lewisporte Collegiate. Competing against the host at Ascension Collegiate will be Bishops College (St. John's), Exploits Valley High (Grand Falls-Windsor) and Discover Collegiate (Bonavista). Play gets under way at 1:30 p.m. at Roncalli and 2 p.m. at Ascension on Friday. Two matches will be played at each venue Saturday morning with playoffs and the championship game scheduled for Saturday afternoon at Roncalli.

The Boys 3A Island Volleyball Championship was held this past weekend in Port Rexton. The host school, Bishop White All-Grade, won the gold medal with a 25-8, 26-24 win over Holy Cross from St. Albans. Bishop White advanced to the final with a 25-6, 25-15 win over Indian River High (Springdale), while Holy Cross defeated Coaker Academy 25-21, 25-19 in the other semi-final. Coaker Academy took the bronze medal defeating Indian River by scores of 18-25, 25-15, 18-16. The win for Bishop White All-Grade qualifies that team for a trip to the provincial 3A tournament hosted by Menihek High in Wabush on December 10. The 3A Girls island winner, Pasadena Academy, will also compete in Labrador.
