The following is being distributed at the request of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador: Volleyfest 99 Results The Newfoundland and Labrador Volleyball Association's organizing committee is very pleased to report that the Beresford Ltd. Volleyfest 99 was a tremendous success. With 96 teams competing (57 girls and 39 boys) and seven championships decided the organizing committee felt that the event could not have happened any better than it did logistically. In addition this year, volleyball has undergone some major rule changes especially with the rally point scoring system and with this being one of the largest sporting events in the province it is great to see how the teams adjusted to dramatic changes so quickly. The event continues to be such a great success simply because of its size and great competition level. All the teams enjoy the opportunity to come together on one weekend and see how the match up against teams from other areas of the province, at such an early stage in the volleyball season. The NLVA believes that the benefits to running this event are tremendous, as the young athletes get exposed to the great competition at an early point in their playing career and they also get to see the older athletes compete during the weekend. Other benefits that the NLCA gains from this weekend are the chance to observe possible athletes and future coaches for upcoming Provincial Teams and Canada Games Teams. Many of these athletes could possibly be overlooked in the regional tryout process. With so many coaches involved it also gives the NLVA a chance to see how the high school coaches are developing and gives the NLVA a good feel for areas that need work in the coming year to continue to improve the provinces' overall level of coaching.
