The following is being distributed at the request of the Newfoundland and Labrador High School Athletic Federation:

Provincial High School Soccer and Slo-Pitch Championships this weekend

The coming weekend is a very busy one for high school athletes across the province, as the High School Athletic Federation will be sponsoring eight provincial high school championships. Four soccer and four slo-pitch champions will be crowned.

Bishops College in St. John's is the host school for the boys 4A soccer. Eight teams will compete in two divisions for the title. In Division A, St. Lawrence Central High, Holy Heart of Mary, Gander Collegiate and Carbonear Collegiate will face off, while Division B will see action from Herdman Collegiate (Corner Brook), O'Donel High, Bishops College and Laval High School (Placentia). Games will be played at various venues throughout the city including Fieldian Grounds, Smallwood Field, Provincial Recreation Center and Memorial University. Play will get underway 4 p.m., Thursday evening and will conclude with the championship game 2 p.m., Saturday at Fieldian Grounds.

Stephenville High School will host the six team 4A girls soccer tournament. Stephenville High and Stephenville Middle School pitches will be used for the tournament, which will start 9:15, Friday morning. Division A will see competition between Bishops College, Herdman Collegiate and Carbonear Collegiate. Division B will feature O'Donel High, Stephenville High and Gander Collegiate. The top two teams from each division will advance to the playoffs. The championship game will be played at 2 p.m., Saturday.

Both boys and girls 3A soccer tournaments will be held on the Burin Peninsula. John Burke High in Grand Bank will host a five team boys tournament while St. Lawrence Central High will host the four team girls event. Competing on the boys side will be Mobile Central High, Holy Trinity High (Hearts Content), Holy Name of Mary (Lawn), Baie Verte High and the host. The tournament will be a two division format. The three team division will play a round robin contest, while the two team division will play two games total goals, the championship game is set for 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

The girls 3A soccer will be a four team round robin event. Along with the host, St. Lawrence, Mobile Central High, Baie Verte High and Belanger Memorial will be vying for top honors. The first game is scheduled for 9:30 a.m., Friday with the final slated to get underway at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

The High School Athletic Federation Provincial Slo-Pitch finals will be held this coming weekend. Four champions will be decided in boys and girls 4A and boys and girls 3A.

The girls 3A tournament will be held at St. Joseph's Academy in Lamaline. Eight teams will compete in a two division set up with the top two teams advancing to the playoff round. Competing in Division A will be J.M. Olds Collegiate (Twillingate), Cape John Collegiate (LaScie), St. John's Central High (Burgeo) and the host St. Joseph's. Division B will see action from Stella Maris Central High (Trepassey), St. Marks All grade (Kings Cove), Roncalli Central High and Christ the King High (Rushoon). The first game is set for 9:30 a.m., Friday morning. Round robin games continue throughout Friday and into Saturday morning. The championship game gets underway 5 p.m. Saturday.

St. Joseph's Central High in St. Georges is the host school for the boys 3A event. Once again eight teams will square off for the title. The Red Division will consist of the host, St. Michaels All Grade (Arnolds Cove), Sacred Heart Academy (Conche) and J.M. Olds Collegiate (Twillingate). Battling for the two playoff spots in the Blue division will be Belanger Memorial (Doyles), Stella Maris High (Trepassey), Cape John Collegiate (LaScie) and St. Joseph's Academy. Round robin games will take place Friday beginning at 10 a.m. The championship game is set for 1 p.m., Saturday.

Roncalli High in Avondale is the host school for the Girls 4A Slo-Pitch. Six teams will be vying for top honors. The tournament will be set up in a two divisional format. In the Red Division, the host school takes on Dorset Collegiate (Pilley's Island) and Stephenville High while in the White Division, Queen Elizabeth Regional High (Foxtrap), Marystown High and Clarenville High will square off. The first game is scheduled for 9 a.m. Friday with games continuing throughout the day. The championship game will be played at 1:30 p.m.

Bonavista is the site of the 4A Boys Championship as Discovery Collegiate host nine other schools. In Division one the host, Marystown Central High, Fogo Island Central High, Carbonear Integrated and Leo Burke Academy (Bishops Falls) will compete in a round robin contest to determine the two qualifying teams to advance. The teams competing in Division two include Gonzaga High, Queen Elizabeth Regional High (Foxtrap), Dorset Collegiate (Pilley's Island) and Templet on Collegiate. The Bonavista field and Port Union field will be used throughout the day starting at 9 a.m. The championship game is slated for 2 p.m. on Saturday.

The federation provides gold and silver medals for each of the winning teams as well as a championship banner for each of the winning schools. Keyin Sportsmanship Awards will be presented at each tournament. Keyin College and School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers Association are the official sponsors of the High School Athletic Federation and milk is the official beverage for all tournaments.
