Canada Games Men's Volleyball coaches announced

The Newfoundland and Labrador Volleyball Association is pleased to announce that the selection for the Canada Games Men's Indoor Volleyball coaches has been announced. Rex Hillier will be the head coach of the team and will be supported by Ron Noseworthy as the assistant coach and Terry Mosher as the manager

Hillier, who is a teacher in Booth Memorial High School, brings with him a vast experience in coaching for over 20 years at the high school level as well as the national level. In the past few summers Hillier has been the head coach for the NLVA's Midget Elite Program that has travelled and competed in invitational competition and national competition in eastern Canada.

Noseworthy is also a teacher in St. John's at Bishop's College and has been coaching at the high school level for the past 15 years. During the past three years Noseworthy has also been involved with the NLVA provincial team programs in various capacities as a head coach or an assistant coach.

Mosher, a teacher at Queen Elizabeth High School, has been involved in coaching at the high school level for the past 20 years. Most recently Mosher was the head coach of the 1997 Canada Games Ladies Team that competed in Brandon attaining a sixth place finish. Mosher as well has been involved in coaching several NLVA midget provincial teams in the past six years.

Karen Murphy, elite development chair for the NLVA says: "The association is extremely pleased to have such a quality staff in place to prepare the men's team for the Canada Games." Murphy as well feels that the athlete pool in the province is very strong and if coaches can get the best athletes identified and selected the team will be a strong contingent for the games in London in 2001.

The coaching staff is already busy beginning the two year process to the games, as they will be holding an open tryout in Grand Falls-Windsor for west coast and central athletes on Saturday, October 2 at Exploits Valley High School (Greenwood Division). Sessions will be held from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. - 5 p.m. The cost of the camp will be $25. In order to be eligible for this team, players must be born in 1982 or later.

For further information on the tryout in central Newfoundland or the Canada Games Volleyball Program please contact the NLVA , (709) 576-0817 or Rex Hillier, (709) 834-4434.
