Summer Club Championships set for this weekend

Nearly 400 swimmers representing 10 clubs from St. Anthony to Grand Bank will be in Gander this weekend for the Provincial Summer Swim Club Championships.

Meet manager and summer clubs president, Kevin Pollard of Springdale, is expecting some exciting swimming and great competition as all the swimmers strive to improve their times and help their teams in the race for the top team trophy. In addition to St. Anthony and Grand Bank, Rocky Harbour, Baie Verte, Springdale, Buchans, Grand Falls-Windsor, Gander, Bay Roberts and Marystown are sending teams to the championships.

Summer club swimming takes place primarily in communities with outdoor pools and a restricted amount of training time. With entries standing at 392, this years championship will be the biggest yet. Competition gets underway at the Arts and Culture Centre pool in Gander at 1:00 p.m. on Friday and wraps up on Sunday afternoon.
