Newfoundland and Labrador Volleyball Association - Provincial Awards
The Association's Provincial Awards will be presented this weekend at a
luncheon during their Annual General Meeting. The presentation will take place on June 12
from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. The finalists have been selected in each category as follows:
Reg Soper Memorial Award - Dedication & Work in Volleyball
FINALISTS:
Bruce Andrews - Grand Falls-Winsor
-Organizer of the
Beothuk Volleyball Club which had 105 students involved in the program this year and had
13 teams enter NLVA sanctioned
tournaments.
-Coached the Exploits
Valley High School Senior Girls Volleyball Team that came second at the Juvenile A Girls
Provincial Championships and represented
the Province at
the National Juvenile Championships.
-Convenor of three NLVA
tournaments, as well as the annual Abitibi- Consolidated Papermaking Classic.
Peter Hickman - St. John's
-Chairperson of the
National Juvenile Organizing Committee.
-Chairperson of the
NLVA Hall of Fame Committee.
-Played and received an
All Star at the Senior B Mens Provincial Championships.
Rex Hillier - CBS
-Co-organizer and
administrator of the very successful CBS Sabres Volleyball Club, which had summer
development camps, a grade five and six Volleyball
League,
and a co-ed junior volleyball league. The club had teams enter in every provincial
tournament held by the NLVA.
-Head coach of the CBS
Sabres Midget and Juvenile Boys Volleyball Teams, as well as the 1998 and 1999 Male
Provincial Midget Elite Volleyball Team.
The CBS
Sabres Midget Team won a bronze medal at the Eastern Canadian Midget Championship, while
the Juvenile Team represented the province at
the
National Championships as well.
-first Vice President
of the NLVA and President of the St. John's Senior A Men's League.
-Convenor of two
Provincial Championships and one invitational tournament.
-Member of the ONCA
team who won the 1999 Provincial Senior A Mens Championships and received an All Star at
this event.
Eric Hiscock - Bell Island
-Organizer and
Administrator of the Islanders Volleyball Club, who has teams and players of all ages.
-Head Coach of the
Pre-Bantam, Bantam, Midget, Junior High, Juvenile and Senior Bell Island Teams, who
travelled to NLVA Provincial Tournaments.
Also, Head
Coach of the 1998 Girls Provincial Midget+1 Elite Team and 1999 Midget Girls Provincial
Team.

-Head Coach of the
Herdman Senior Girls Volleyball Team, City Chrysler Vipers (Humber Valley Volleyball Club)

Vipers won gold at the Provincial A Juvenile Girls Championships and represented the
province at the National Juvenile Championships

Rex Hillier - CBS
-Head Coach of the CBS
Sabres Midget and Juvenile Boys Volleyball teams, as well as the 1998 and 1999 Male

Team won a bronze medal at the Eastern Canadian Midget Championship, while the Juvenile

at the Eastern Canadian Midget Elite
Volleyball
Championships in the summer of 1998.

Karen Murphy - St. John's
-Head Coach of the
Memorial University Women's Varsity Volleyball Team. The team finished the regular season
with a 16-2 win-loss record. The team
lost a
hard fought match during the semifinals, losing to the Dalhousie Tigers in the fifth game.
-The MUN team was a
finalist for the 1998 Provincial Team of the Year.
-Head Coach of the 1998
NLVA Midget Elite Team, who travelled to the Midget Elite Eastern Canadian Championships
and the Quebec Plus Midget Elite
Championships.
-Coach and Organizer of
several development camps for both junior and senior high players.
-Volunteer for the 1999
National Juvenile championships as a member of the Protocol and Awards Committee and a
venue manager.
Wayne Sheppard Memorial Award (Senior Male Player of the Year)

Adam Fowler
-Team captain of the
Memorial University Mens Volleyball Team
-Named to the Memorial
University Athletic Honors Society
-Fifth in blocking and
fourth in digs in the AUAA.
-Member of the silver
medalist team at the Senior A Mens Provincial Championships and was named to the All Star
Team at this event.
Michael Hayes
-Member of the Memorial
University Mens Volleyball Team.
-Selected as an AUAA
All Star.
-Fifth in kills and
second in digs in the AUAA.
-Member of the silver
medalist team at the Senior Mens A Provincial Championships and was selected as an All
Star at this event.

on the Memorial University Women's Volleyball Team that finished the 1998-99 regular

Cheryl Oldford
-Starting setter on the
Memorial University Women's Volleyball Team that finished the 1998-99 regular season with
a 16-2 win-loss record, and that lost to

in the league semi-final 3-2.
-Awarded the Harold
Squires Memorial Trophy for 1998-99, which is awarded to the Memorial University
student-athlete who best combines academic
achievements and athletic prowess.
-Named St. John's
Athlete of the Year.
-Finalist for the 1998
Provincial Female Athlete of the Year.
-Named to the Dean's
List for the Faculty of Education.
-Named an Academic
All-Canadian for the 1998-99 academic year.
-Recipient of a Sport

Cindy Walsh

for the 1998-99 season.

medalist team at the Provincial Senior A Womens Championships.

with a Bachelor of Arts from Memorial University.

Robbie West Memorial Award (Minor Male Player of the Year)

for the Provincial Midget Elite Team during the summer of 1998.

Elizabeth High School Mens Volleyball Team which finished second in the St. John's
Regional Championships and fourth at the
Provincial
4A Championships.

Sabres Juvenile Volleyball Team which finished fifth at the Provincial Boys Juvenile A
Championships and represented Newfoundland
at the
National Juvenile Championships.
-Selected as an All
Star at the Juvenile Provincials.

Tommy Kelly
-Member of the Roncalli
High School Volleyball Team, who won several tournaments throughout the season including
the Provincial 4A Volleyball
Championship and the Provincial Juvenile A Volleyball Championships.
-Selected as an All
Star at the Juvenile Championships.
-Member of the NLVA
Midget+1 Team during the summer of 1998. This team won a bronze medal and Tommy was
selected as an All Star.
-Invited to try out for
the Junior National Team.
-Recruited by
Dalhousie, University of Manitoba and the University of Calgary.
Robbie West Memorial Award (Minor Female Player of the Year)

Deanne Hiscock
-Captain of the Bell
Island Juvenile Team.

Team at the Midget +1 Eastern Canadian Championships.

Girls Team from Bell Island who received a bronze medal at the Provincial Bantam
Championships.
Vikki Locke
-Captain of the Herdman
Huskies School Team who placed 4th at the Dalhousie High School Tournament and Silver at
the Abitibi Classic.
-Member of the City
Chrysler Vipers Juvenile Team, who won the Girls Juvenile A Provincial Championships and
placed 12th at the National Juvenile
Championships.

Program which consisted of four camps for it's young athletes.
-13 Sabres are
currently training with the 1999 Midget Elite Program and four Sabres Coaches are
involved.
-Provided a Saturday
house league for grades five to seven and held a co-ed League for grade 9-12 students.
-Had the following

City Chrysler Vipers Girls Juvenile Volleyball Team (Humber Volleyball Club)
-Provincial Juvenile A
champions.
-Represented
Newfoundland at the National Juvenile Championships, where they placed 12th overall.
-Several members of the
team were members of the summer Midget Elite Program.
Memorial University Women's Volleyball Team
-Finished the regular
season of the AUAA women's volleyball league with an outstanding 16-2 win-loss record.
This put the team in third place overall as a
result
of a three-way tie.
-During the playoffs,
the team lost a hard fought semifinal match to Dalhousie Tigers 3-2.
-Two members of the
team were selected as AUAA All Stars.
-Several of the team
members finished in the top 10 in the league statistics.
-Finalist for 1998
Provincial Team of the Year.
-Eight members of the
varsity squad went on to play at the Provincial Women's A Senior Championships.
