High School Athletic Federation names new president

Mike Sutton from O'Donel High in Mount Pearl has taken over the reigns as president of the High School Athletic Federation. He was elected this past weekend at the federation's annual general meeting. Kevin Pittman from St. Lawrence finished up the second of his two-year terms as president and now steps in to the past-president position. Rosemary Ryan from Stephenville was acclaimed as the vice-president finance/marketing. Other board members include Dennis Lush - Carmanville, Bill Hurley - St. John's, Sean Cashin - Harbour Grace, Ken Mandville - St. Brides, Keith Randell - Port Rexton, Dominic Lambe - Lamaline, Gerald Wheeler - Musgrave Harbour, Paul Butt - Botwood, Jack Cooper - Stephenville, Mike Ball - Port Saunders and Darryl Feener - Lake Melville.

The general membership agreed to some new initiatives this past weekend to raise the profile and raise funds for high school sports. An entry fee will now be charged to all participants at regional and provincial tournaments. The Board will also be meeting with various groups such as government and the Newfoundland Labrador Hockey Association to discuss the relationship with high school sports. For the 1999-2000 year the High School Athletic Federation will sponsor a School of the Year Award to outstanding schools among its members.

The bids were accepted at the A.G.M. for all the federation provincial tournaments for the 1999-2000 school year. The majority of these have now been awarded. The remaining ones will be open to all schools to bid on.

The Newfoundland representatives to the 2000 Reebok National Invitational Basketball tournament were selected at the Awards Banquet Friday evening. St. Francis Central High Boys and St. Lawrence Central High Girls were selected for the February 2000 event. The six finalists for selection were based on the teams performance over the past three years with points being awarded for the top four finishers in provincial competition. The alternates selected were St. Catherine's Academy and St. Lawrence Boys and O'Donel and Stella Maris Girls.
