The following is being released at the request of the Newfoundland Labrador High School Athletic Federation:

High School Badminton Championships Set

Three high school badminton team champions will be crowned this coming weekend. The 2A provincial championships will be hosted by Lake Melville School in Northwest River. When high school tournaments are held in Labrador, an island tournament is held two weeks previous to this with the winner advancing to the provincial to compete against Labrador schools. St. James All Grade in Lark Harbour was the Island champion and will compete against the host, Lake Melville, Peenamin MacKenzie (Sheshatshiu), J.C. Erhardt (Makkovik), Eric G. Lambert School (Churchill Falls) and Henry Gordon Academy (Cartwright).

The 3A tournament is being hosted by Templeton Collegiate in Gilliams. Five teams will be competing for the championship title. Greenwood Academy (Milltown), Glovertown Regional High, Goose High School (Happy Valley-Goose Bay) and Jakeman All Grade (Trout River) will face off along with the host in this event.

Four teams will be competing for the 4A Badminton title. Queen Elizabeth Regional High in Foxtrap will play host to Prince of Wales Collegiate (St. John's), Ascension Collegiate (Bay Roberts) and John Burke High in Grand Bank.

The team competition is set up under an encounter system. Each round will consist of a set of five matches - girls singles, boys singles, girls doubles, boys doubles and mixed doubles. The team winning three out of five matches will receive the win.

In addition to crowning three badminton team champions, individual champions will also be declared in each of the five disciplines - girls singles, boys singles, girls doubles, boys doubles and mixed doubles.

Championship banners will be presented to each winning team. Gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded in the team competition. All High School Athletic Federation tournaments are sponsored by Keyin College and School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers Association of Newfoundland and Labrador.
