The following is being distributed at the request of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador:

The annual general meeting of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador will take place on Saturday, May 8, at the Fluvarium, 5 Nagle's Place, St. John's. Registration for this year's annual meeting will begin at 8:30 a.m. with a meet and greet reception for the delegates and guests and the annual meeting will start at 9:15 a.m.

Items of business for the meeting include a review of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador's programs over the past year, the election of officers, the strategic plan for 1999/2000, a change to the constitution, a resolution dealing with the cost-sharing of delegates to the annual general meeting, fund raising and in particular the Mini-Lottery Program, and marketing initiatives.

As well, information sessions will be conducted by Patsy Yetman, Area Sales Manager for InterCanadian/Canadian Airlines, on the sport air travel program for all sport Newfoundland and Labrador Members; Colin Higgs, Director of the Department of Physical Education, Athletics and Recreation at Memorial University, will do a presentation on the MUN Field House facility; Kevin Waterman from the Town of Gander will do a presentation on the new Gander Civic Centre which will be available for utilization by the provincial sport organizations in the near future. Other information sessions are in the process of being finalized for May 8.

The election of officers will see elections for the position of president, first vice-president, second vice-president, secretary, and treasurer. The elections for the position of northern director, central director and southern director will be for a two-year term. Barbara Predham of Mount Pearl is this year's chairperson of the nominating committee. Other members include executive member Hank Summers of boxing, and badminton and tennis executive director Janice Reid-Boland.

This year's annual meeting will vote on one amendment to the constitution of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador. Members of the board of directors are proposing to change the date of the annual meeting from the month of May to the month of October. If this amendment is passed, the next annual meeting of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador will take place during October 2000.

During the annual meeting luncheon, scheduled for 12 noon, four regional winners and the provincial winner of the 1998 Frank W. Graham Memorial Award will be announced and the awards presented to the winners. As well, Sport Newfoundland and Labrador's Scholarship Committee will be awarding 22 scholarships to 22 of Newfoundland and Labrador finest post-secondary athletes.

The registration fee for this year's meeting and the Volunteer of the Year and Scholarship Luncheon is $15 per person. Further information on this meeting and luncheon ticket purchases can be obtained by contacting the Sports Federation office at (709) 576-4932.
