High School Island Table Tennis Champions to be crowned

This coming weekend eight teams will converge on Port Rexton to compete in the island table tennis tournament. The top teams from across the island are competing for the right to travel to Happy Valley-Goose Bay for the Provincial High School Table Tennis Championships.

There will be a team and an individual component to the event. In the team event two divisions of four will play round robin encounters in an attempt to qualify for semi-final and final play. Each encounter will consist of one boys singles match, one girls singles match, one boys doubles match, one girls doubles match and one mixed doubles match. To get a win, a team must win three out of five matches in an encounter. Competing in Division A will be the host school, Bishop White All Grade (Port Rexton), Indian River High (Springdale), North Shore Collegiate (Northern Bay) and John Watkins Academy (Hermitage). Seeing action in Division B will be Glovertown High, Assumption High (Stephenville Crossing), Jane Collins Academy (Dover) and St. Augustine's (Plum Point). Encounters get under way 9:45 a.m. Friday and continue throughout the day culminating in the gold medal matches.

Play continues into Saturday with the individual competition. Champions will be declared in boys and girls singles, boys and girls doubles and mixed doubles. Individuals have qualified for these events by winning their respective regional competitions. In addition to entries from the regional winning teams, competitors entered in the individual competition will represent Legallais Memorial (Isle aux Morts) and Dorset Collegiate (Pilleys Island).

The team champions will receive gold medals as well as the championship banner. The winners of the individual events will be awarded gold, silver and bronze medals.
