The following is being distributed at the request of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador:

Provincial boys basketball championships set

Four high school boys basketball teams will be declared provincial champions on the March 26 and 27 weekend. Thirty-eight teams from around the province will compete in the four tournaments.

Elwood Regional High in Deer Lake will be the host school for the 4A tournament. Eight teams will compete in two divisions of round robin play attempting to make it to the semi-finals. The red division will see action from Stella Maris (Trepassey), O'Donel High (Mount Pearl), Regina High (Corner Brook), and Gander Collegiate. Competing against the host school in the blue division will be Holy Heart of Mary High (St. John's), Exploits Valley High (Grand Falls-Windsor) and Roncalli Central High (Avondale). The opening ceremonies will kick off the tournament at 1 p.m. Thursday followed by round robin games at Elwood and Xavier gyms. The free throw competition will take place between games on Friday, at 12:15 p.m. The championship game is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Twelve teams are registered for the boys 3A event being hosted by Holy Trinity High in Torbay. Four divisions of three teams will play in round robin action to try to advance through quarter final and semi finals to the championship game. Section A will put St. Catherine's (Salmonier), Musgravetown Central High and Pasadena Academy against each other. In section B, Mobile High, Menihek High (Labrador City) and St. James Regional High will battle it out. The host school will play against Botwood Collegiate and Harriot Curtis Collegiate (St. Anthony). Section C and rounding out the tournament in Section D will be St. Francis (Harbour Grace), Fogo Island Central High and St. Kevin's (Goulds).

The opening ceremonies will take place 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Holy Trinity followed by round robin games at Holy Trinity and the Torbay Recreation Center. The free throw contest will be held 1 p.m. on Friday. Quarter final games are scheduled for Friday evening with the semi finals Saturday morning and the championship game 2 p.m. Saturday.

St. Lawrence Central High will host 10 schools competing in the 2A provincial championship. Two venues, St. Lawrence Central High and Laurentian Place will be used for the event. Competing in the white division will be Blanger Memorial (Doyles), Cape John Collegiate (LaScie), Riverwood Academy (Gander Bay), St. Augustine's High (Plum Point) and St. Joseph's Academy (Lamaline). Battling in the blue division against the host school will be Dunne Memorial (St. Mary's), Southwest Arm Academy (Little Heart's Ease), Goose High School and Whitbourne High. Play will begin at 1 p.m. on Thursday. The opening ceremonies are set for 5:15 p.m. Thursday. The semi-finals will take place Saturday morning followed by a 2 p.m. championship game.

Teams qualifying for the provincial A championships will converge on St. Joseph's Central High in Bay de Verde. Eight teams have qualified and will compete for the title. Division 1 will see action from Mountain Field Academy (Forteau), St. Joseph's Academy, St. Anne's Academy (Dunville), St. Peter's Academy (Westport). In division 2 teams competing will include Lakewood Academy (Glenwood), Our Saviour King (Southern Harbour), Holy Name of Mary (Lawn) and Long Island Academy (Beaumont). Games will be played at both St. Joseph's Academy and Tricon Elementary schools, getting under way Thursday at 4 p.m. Round robin games continue through to Friday evening. The semi-final games are scheduled for 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Saturday morning followed by the championship game at 2 p.m.

Keyin College and School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers Association are the sponsors for all four of the provincial tournaments.
