Popular Tely 10 Road Race set for July 11

Organizers of the annual Telegram 10 Mile Road Race have announced that the popular run, one of the oldest sporting events in the province will take place Sunday, July 11, at 8:30 a.m. sharp.

This historic road race, which last year drew close to 700 participants, will once again begin near Octagon Pond in Paradise and will proceed east along Topsail Road through Mount Pearl and into St. John's via LeMarchant Road, Harvey Road, and Military Road before finishing in Bannerman Park.

First run back in 1922, the Tely 10 has become the province's premier road race and this year is expected to draw well in excess of 700 walkers, recreational joggers, and competitive runners. For competitive runners this is the one race they all want to win, to add their names to a long list of former champions.

Over the course of its long history, runners like Ron O'Toole, Cliff Stone, and the great Pat Kelly have all reigned as Tely champions. In recent years, spectators along the course and at the finish line have witnessed outstanding performances by colourful Harold St. Croix and Olympian Paul McCloy, both of whom have recorded several victories in this race.

Again this year both male and female winners will have their names inscribed on the new perpetual trophy presented by The Telegram in 1997. Prizes will also be awarded to the top three male and female finishers in various categories, beginning with the under 20 group and extending all the way up to 70 years of age and over. Newfoundland and Labrador Athletics Association (NLAA) club awards and open team awards will also be presented at the awards reception scheduled for the evening of race day.

According to George Stanoev, technical director of the NLAA, inquiries concerning the 1999 race have already been received at the Athletics Association office. Last year runners from just about every province in Canada participated in the Tely 10, as well as several runners from the United States.

The organizing committee for the Tely 10 is now in the process of preparing for the 1999 race. The committee expects again this year a record number of participants, considering the mild winter has been exceptional for training. Among those expected to compete this year are last year's male and female winners, Scott Young and Nooleen Wadden.

As in previous years each participant will receive a souvenir Tely 10 T-shirt, a Certificate of Participation denoting position and time, an official copy of the Tely 10 results showing breakdown by age group, as well as a quality race organization with traffic marshals throughout the course, and water stops at regular intervals throughout the race.
