High school girls hoop champions to be declared

Girls high school basketball teams take to the court this weekend hoping to claim one of four provincial championship banners. The High School Athletic Federation tournaments are being sponsored by the School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers Association and Keyin College.

The girls A championships will take place in Bay de Verde, hosted by St. Joseph's Central High. The tournament will be run as a six team round robin event. The participating teams include the hosts, Greenwood Academy from Milltown, Lakewood Academy from Glenwood, St. Marks All Grade (King's Cove), St. Peters Academy from Westport and Holy Name of Mary Academy in Lawn. Games get under way Thursday at noon at St. Joseph's and Triton gyms followed by the opening ceremonies at 1:30. The championship game will be played at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Ten teams will be competing in the girls 2A championships, hosted by St. John Bosco in Shea Heights. Games will be played at Bosco, Gonzaga, Brother Rice and the Torbay Recreation Center gyms. Games start 4:30 Wednesday evening, and clue up with a 3 p.m. championship game on Saturday. The opening ceremonies will be 5 p.m. on Thursday. Teams vying for the championship include: Whitbourne High, St, Catherine's (Salmonier), St. Michaels (Arnolds Cove), J.M. Olds Collegiate (Twillingate) and the host in the gold division and St. Lawrence Central High, St. Augustines Central High (Plum Point), Belanger Memorial (Doyles), Goose High (Goose Bay) and North Shore Collegiate (Northern Bay).

Mobile Central High will host 10 teams in the girls 3A provincials. Division 1 teams include the host, St. Francis High (Harbour Grace), Fogo Island Central High, Leo Burke Academy (Bishop's Falls) and Musgravetown Central High. Competing for top spot in Division B will be Baie Verte High, Fatima Academy (St. Bride's), St. Kevin's High (Goulds), Menihek High (Labrador City) and St. George's High (New Harbour). Games will be played at both Mobile and St. Kevin's gyms with the first game set for 9 a.m. Thursday. The opening ceremonies will take place at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. The championship game will be 3 p.m. Saturday.

Ten 4A teams will converge on Trepassey for the 4A Provincial Championships. Battling in the red division will be Holy Heart of Mary (St. John's), the host Stella Maris High, Prince of Wales Collegiate (St. John's), Gander Collegiate and Stephenville High. The blue division will see action from Laval High (Placentia), Roncalli Central High (Avondale), Elwood Regional High (Deer Lake), Exploits Valley High (Grand Falls-Windsor) and Beaconsfield High (St. John's). Four teams will play games before arriving at the host school. Games at Trepassey start at 9 a.m. Thursday and continue through to Saturday morning. The championship game is set for 5 p.m.
