The following is being distributed at the request of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador:

High school teams off to Reebok National Basketball Tournament

Reebok will be hosting a National Invitational Basketball Tournament in Hamilton, Ontario, February 11-14. The tournament, in its second year, will bring together high school teams from across the country for exciting basketball contests. The entries from Newfoundland and Labrador were selected by the Newfoundland Labrador High School Athletic Federation, based on the teams performance over the past three seasons. The boys team selected was Elwood Regional High School Lakers from Deer Lake and the girls entry will be Prince of Wales Collegiate Cavaliers from St. John's. This will be the first year having a girls draw in the tournament. Newfoundland and Labrador were represented last year by Holy Heart of Mary from St. John's.

The Prince of Wales Collegiate team will face the following teams in the round robin portion of the competition: Colonel Gray (PEI), Mount Baker (BC), Medicine Hat (AB) and Polvalente de la Foret (PQ). The Cavaliers games are scheduled for Thursday at 9:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. and Friday at 12:00 noon and 3:00 p.m. The PWC team includes Valerie Taylor, Danika Taylor, Angie Power, Maria Thistle, Marlene Power, Laura Churchill, Heather Fogwill, Lauren McClintock, Nikki Rogers, Tracey King, Emily Cave, Deborah Quaicoe, Coaches Paul Byrne and Laura Conway, Manager Carolyn Forg and Teacher-Sponsor Donna Brenton.

The Elwood team will face competition from the same provinces and their competition will include: Hugh McRoberts (BC), Colonel Gray (PEI), Raymond (AB) and Ilege Jean-de-Brebeuf (PQ). The Lakers will play Thursday at 11:15 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. and Friday at 12:00 noon and 3:30 p.m. The Elwood team making the trip are Seby Joseph, Jonathon Fudge, Jeff Williams, Aaron Winsor, Ryan Chaulk, Michael Harvey, Larry Normore, Nicholas Toope, Tim Winsor, Darren (Jr) Hoyles, David Woodford, William Hodder, Coaches P.C. Joseph, Caines and Charlie Barker.

The championship games are scheduled for Saturday at McMaster University at 12:30 p.m. for the boys final and 2:30 p.m. for the girls final. The boys final will be carried live on CTV at 12:30 EST.
