Provincial soccer's best for 1998

Provincial soccer's best for 1998 have been named with four of seven awards going to the Burin Peninsula.

The St. Lawrence Laurentians are team of the year and members Harry Kelly and Richard Kelly are senior and junior players of the year.

Sarah Drake of Burin is junior female player of the year while the nod for senior female player of the year went to Raeleen Dunne of Mount Pearl.

Mount Pearl's Walt Mavin is coach of the year and Peter Hood of St. John's won volunteer of the year.

In making the announcement, provincial president Angus Barrett of St. John's explained that the seven have been nominated for provincial awards.

Drake was selected after an impressive year at the local, provincial and national levels. Top scorer in the Burin Peninsula senior league, she led Burin Eagles to an undefeated season and the peninsula title. A peninsula all-star, Drake made the provincial under-18-years all-stars and played in the Atlantic tournament. Playing for University College of Cape Breton, she tied for the AUAA scoring crown, was voted AUAA rookie of the year and named to the Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Union first all-stars.

Raeleen Dunne was recognized as she continued her impressive soccer career, especially in Ontario intercollegiate competition. She played with the Mount Pearl club that took the silver medal in the Co-Operators provincial senior championships after performing in the St. John's Ladies League. Dunne was a major factor in Queen's University enjoying an undefeated season in the Ontario University Athletic Association schedule. She was named to the Ontario first all-star team and to the Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Union's second all-star club.

Richard Kelly took his award after an outstanding 1998. It started when Kelly was voted MVP for the top provincial high school championships. He scored 13 of his team's goals, including all five in semi-finals and both markers in the title game. His eight goals for the St. Lawrence Intermediates were the highest by any player in the league. In the under-18-years category he scored nine goals for the province in the Atlantic tournament, played for Team Atlantic at the national level and was selected to the Eastern Canada All-stars for a U.S. tour. Richard Kelly moved to the St. Lawrence Laurentians who won the provincial Molson Challenge Cup title and finished fifth in the National championship.

A great senior season gained his award for Harry Kelly. Named to the Molson Challenge Cup all-stars, he was the competition's top scorer, regular season MVP and championship game MVP. While his provincial season set the standard for soccer, Harry Kelly suffered a severe groin injury and was unable to play at the national level.

Mavin is a nationally certified technical level three coach. A member of the Mount Pearl winter training program coaching staff, he coached the Mount Pearl under-17-years team to the final of the St. John's Intermediate league but lost on a penalty shoot-out in the title game. The club he coached won the gold medal in the Mount Pearl league and at the provincial under-17-years championships. It won gold in the CBC 25th anniversary tournament. The Mount Pearl squad he coached played in the national under-17-years Snickers championships.

Hood served as a member of the board of the St. John's minor association as well was provincial soccer's director of youth. In St. John's, he was tournament chair, chair for minor soccer week, responsible for the computer registration program and a member of the coaching selection committee. Provincially, he headed a group with a membership registration of more than 8,000 and solved many problems. Nationally, he is a member of the competitions committee and was in charge of the national Snickers under-17-years championships in B.C.

The 1998 Molson's Challenge Cup champions St. Lawrence Laurentians earned the designation of team of the year for impressive play in provincial Molson Challenge Cup, finishing in first place and winning the championship. Their record was 16 wins, one loss and one tie with 58 goals scored and only 11 scored against. At the national Challenge Cup, playing against the best seven teams in Canada, St. Lawrence was very competitive in every game and placed fifth overall.
