Canadian sportfishing show films in Labrador

Charles Furey, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, is delighted that the Canadian Sportfishing Show is currently filming footage in Labrador for the upcoming season. Canadian Sportfishing Productions Inc., are filming the footage to produce a minimum of three, four to five minute segments on fishing in Labrador, which will appear on the show on TSN (The Sports Network).

"Once again, we can see the high calibre of the fishing industry in Labrador. This show will be seen by millions of Canadians and Americans, and will be a real boost to the industry in Labrador," said Furey. "In the past couple of years we have seen the tourism industry take off in the province, and the fishing experience in Labrador is an important component of our overall tourism package."

The TV crew, hosted by local outfitter Jim Burton of Flower River Lodge, has finished filming one show on Arctic Char. The fishing has been so outstanding that the producers are now filming a second show on Atlantic Salmon. There are also tentative plans to continue shooting for a third show on brook trout.

Local Newfoundland curler, Toby MacDonald, is accompanying the film crew. Mr. MacDonald is an avid fly fisher. The shows will be aired in October 1999, ending in March 2000, and repeated from April to September 2000. The program is also scheduled to air on the "Outdoor Life Network" in the U.S.A., or on an alternate, comparable network.

The group will travel this weekend to Conception Bay, where they will be hosted by Mr. Greer Hunt. There, they will fish for blue finn tuna and shark.
