American-based Archaeology Magazine tours province

Charles Furey, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, is delighted that Archaeology Magazine from New York, recently toured archaeological sites throughout the province collecting information for upcoming publications.

A team from the magazine, which has a guaranteed circulation of 200,000, visited L'Anse aux Meadows, Port au Choix, Bird Cove, Boyd's Cove, Fleur de Lys, Burnside, Cupids, Brigus and Ferryland. The purpose of the trip was to visit the provinces' unique Maritime and Dorset archaeological sites, for a feature article and a series of subsequent news pieces.

"It is so exciting to see that the world is finally discovering everything that Newfoundland and Labrador has to offer. Our tourism industry is growing and expanding at a rapid pace, and we can see from this experience that we are also a destination for other industries, like archaeology," said Furey. "Our beautiful province has so much to offer the adventurer, the explorer and the researcher. We were delighted to help host this team, as they experienced the wonders Newfoundland and Labrador."

The magazine will be developing Archaeology's Millennium Guide to Ancient Newfoundland and Labrador, a unique archaeological map and newsletter. There are also plans to create a special travel planning section entitled the Millennium Travel Planner to Newfoundland and Labrador, which will appear in the January/February 2000 issue.

The project was co-sponsored by the Department of Canadian Heritage, the Viking Trail Tourism Association and the Colony of Avalon.
