Provincial Archives registers 15,000th researcher

On Monday, July 26 the Provincial Archives of Newfoundland and Labrador registered its 15,000th researcher.

He's Steven Rowe, one of a group of students called the Lewisporte Green Team. They're employed by the Town of Lewisporte and the Newfoundland and Labrador Conservation Corps on a cultural heritage project. Their research concerns military history of the Lewisporte area, in particular, an explosion which occurred in 1942, killing five Canadian servicemen at Hann's Point, an observation post.

Steven was presented with a certificate noting that he was PANL's 15,000th registered researcher, a framed photograph of the Colonial Building, as well as some smaller items including a Soiree '99 pin for each of member of his group. His registration was free.

Photos were taken of Shelley Smith, Director of the Provincial Archives, making the presentation to Steven, as well as Steven with the Reference Staff, and Steven with his team members.

This is the 15,000th researcher registered since September 1988, but it is important to note that a researcher only registers on the initial visit. Once a person has a registration number, at a cost of $10, that person can return again and again to avail of services. Since September 1988, PANL has served more than 82,000 clients in the Research Room at the Colonial Building in St. John's.
