Local artist unveils Soiree '99 commemorative pieces

Charles Furey, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, was on hand today as local artist Luben Boykov unveiled 13 new bronze and wood sculptures, which will be presented to the other provinces and territories, in honour of Newfoundland and Labrador's 50th anniversary of Confederation with Canada. Twelve sculptures will be presented to the nine provinces and three territories, as a symbolic piece of our heritage. One piece will remain on display at various locations in Newfoundland and Labrador throughout the summer and fall of 1999.

"We often speak of the `cultural gift' that this province has given to Canada. I have created 13 sculptures that celebrate the unique culture of Newfoundland. These artworks will act as cultural ambassadors and through a high profile presentation event series will secure a position of strong presence in the physical and spiritual space in the respective province or territory," said Mr. Boykov. "The sculptures incorporate images that have attained the status of social and cultural icons in the consciousness of Newfoundlanders and Canadians, and are Newfoundland's cultural gift to the rest of Canada."

"This project will export the atmosphere and spirit of the Soiree '99 celebrations outside of the province, promoting in a creative way, the uniqueness of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians in the context of Canada," said Furey. "I have always been extremely impressed by the high calibre of Luben's work, and I was delighted when he became involved in this worthwhile project. I know that the recipients of these pieces will be equally delighted when they see his extraordinary work."

This project was sponsored by the 1999 Festival of the Arts program, as part of the ongoing Soiree '99 celebrations. Mr. Boykov owns and operates Sculptures by Luben Garden and Foundry. The new sculptures will be presented to the provinces and territories at dates to be determined later this summer.
