American flotilla visits the province to help celebrate 50 years in Confederation

Charles Furey, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, announced today that he is delighted to welcome the Cruising Club of America to the waters of Newfoundland and Labrador. This flotilla of 35 American boats, is sailing with eight vessels from the Royal Newfoundland Yacht Club, and carrying approximately 400 people, around the Northern Peninsula, and down to Notre Dame Bay. The Flotilla will arrive in the province on July 17.

"I think it is absolutely fabulous, that these American boaters have chosen to come to Newfoundland and Labrador, and to help us celebrate Soiree '99. What a testament to the tourism potential of the province, to have these boating enthusiasts choose Newfoundland and Labrador as their preferred destination this summer," said Furey. "It is also a great economic boost for St. Anthony and surrounding areas. It will provide places like Battle Harbour with a great opportunity to host vessels from outside Canadian waters."

The event has been organized conjointly between the Cruising Club of America and the Royal Newfoundland Yacht Club. The Flotilla will be making stops in St. Anthony, Lewisporte, Hare Bay, Little Bay Islands, and Exploits Island. Members of the Flotilla will enjoy Newfoundland hospitality and cuisine at dinners, garden parties, and rafter parties throughout their journey.

Minister Furey encourages people in the area to get out and welcome the Flotilla, as it visits through your area.
