Newfoundland and Labrador wins Best of Show Award at annual Toronto Travel and Leisure show

Charles Furey, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, says he is very proud to say that Newfoundland and Labrador received the 1999 Best of Show Award at the 13th annual Travel and Leisure Show held at the National Trade Centre in Toronto, April 22 to 25.

"The province of Newfoundland and Labrador's booth was the best of over 280 exhibitors at the 1999 Travel and Leisure Show. I am very proud of this accomplishment by the team of 11 industry and government representatives," said Furey. "The Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, under the leadership of Sandy Hickman, initiated the team approach to the province's participation in the annual show which resulted in the award winning booth."

The 600 square foot display space had a Soiree '99 theme which also included an impressive display of Newfoundland products provided by the Downhomer and Markland Winery. The booth's open space concept enabled visitors to travel throughout the area to view the scenic visuals as well allowing interaction between all of the partners providing comprehensive information on the entire province providing one stop tourism shopping.

The annual Travel and Leisure Show provides exhibitors with the opportunity to meet 1,200 industry representatives in addition to the approximately 25,000 consumers in a four day period. "The Newfoundland and Labrador booth was of high interest to consumers and industry representatives and many excellent comments were noted both from those who have already visited our province and from those seeing our marketing efforts and are planning trips in 1999 and 2000," said Furey.

The Best of Show Award is based on the overall professionalism, design and quality of service provided to both tourism trade and consumers attending the show. "The design layout featured a multi-dimensional display of industry booths interconnected by Soiree and provincial bunting and pageantry. Of particular interest was a product table showcasing the diversity and unique quality of souvenirs and Newfoundland specialty items," added Furey.
