Minister announces provincial representatives for games opening ceremonies

Charles Furey, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today announced the individuals who will represent Newfoundland and Labrador at the opening ceremonies of the 1999 Canada Winter Games. These individuals will be involved in various aspects of the opening ceremonies. They include:

Athletes Oath:     Lee Churchill, Hodge's Cove - Cross Country Skiing
                          Shelly Nichols, Labrador City - Curling

Coaches Oath:    Karen Collingwood, St. John's - Synchronized Swimming
                           Justin Ladha, St. Philip's - Squash

Officials Oath:     Jessica Webb, St. John's - Squash
                          Bill Allan, Corner Brook - Table Tennis

Gift Exchange:     Laura White, Kippens - Judo
                           Glen Piercey, Norman's Cove - Hockey

Flag Exchange:     Samantha Bailey, Mount Pearl - Artistic Gymnastics
                            Jennifer Parsons, Portugal Cove - Squash
                            Monique Ryan, Port Saunders - Ringette
                            Keith Connelly, Labrador City - Table Tennis
                            Michael Meade, Corner Brook - Freestyle Skiing
                            Roger Power, Happy Valley-Goose Bay - Fencing

"It is a privilege to have the opportunity to represent your province in events such as this," said Furey. "These individuals have been extremely dedicated and have worked hard to ensure they would participate in these games. They are certainly worthy of this honour."

The opening ceremonies for the 1999 Canada Winter Games are set to take place at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, February 20, at the Canada Games Centre, Corner Brook.
