Preparations for Labrador Winter Games 2000 to begin

Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation Chuck Furey and minister responsible for Labrador Ernest McLean today announced that the board of directors of the Labrador Winter Games has been given the green light to immediately commence preparations for the March 2000 Labrador Winter Games.

The Labrador Winter Games bring together some 450 athletes and involve about 1,000 volunteers from all communities of Labrador during the week long competition. Many of the events, including snowshoeing, rifle shooting, dog sled racing and the seal crawl, are part of the Labrador culture. In the year 2000 the games will also be an important part of the millennium celebrations.

Since they began in 1983, the Labrador Winter Games have been held every three years, with the exception of the last games which were advanced a year to coincide with the Cabot 500 celebrations.
