Provincial parks offer cross country skiing

Charles Furey, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today announced that cross country ski programs are being offered during winter 1999 at Butter Pot and Notre Dame Provincial Parks.

Butter Pot Park offers skiers 6.7 kilometres of intermediate to advanced ski trails which follow the park's camping loops as well as an isolated trail that encircles Big Otter Pond. A warm-up station is situated off the park's main road. Notre Dame has 7.5 kilometres of competitive trails, varying in length and difficulty, accommodating both skate and traditional skiing, which will challenge novice to advanced skiers. In addition, the park's ski chalet will be available for the comfort of park users.

"Wintertime is an excellent opportunity to get out and enjoy nature," said Furey. "I encourage everyone to take the time out of their hectic schedules to participate in outdoor recreational activities so as to enjoy the province's beautiful scenery and in particular to participate in cross country skiing - one of winter's most popular and healthy activities."

Furey added: "While getting out and enjoying the season will benefit everyone, please keep in mind when using the province's parks that these areas have been designated as special places for everyone to enjoy. Therefore, I ask that everyone work together to protect the natural environment in our province this winter for the benefit of present and future generations."

Parks users are advised that although park roads will not be cleared of snow, a cleared area will be provided so that vehicles can be parked off the highway. In both parks, when snow and weather conditions permit, ski trails will be groomed and tracks set by parks staff.
