Students win scholarships sponsored by Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation

Catherine Drodge of Clarenville, Amy Edwards of Marystown, and Skylar Loder of Marystown are the recipients of $750 scholarships awarded by Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation (NLHC) for the Central region. The winners were announced today by Lloyd Matthews, minister responsible for housing.

NLHC has awarded nine such scholarships to 1999 high school graduates and adults pursuing post-secondary education: three to children of clients; three to children of employees; and three to adult clients returning to school. Awards are offered on a regional basis � Avalon/East, Central and Western/Labrador.

Commenting on the scholarship program, Mr. Matthews said: "NLHC recognizes the importance of an education in today's competitive world and providing scholarships for children and adults alike will remain a priority for the corporation. I commend each of the winners for their commitment and dedication and wish them all the best in their future studies."

Catherine Drodge, winner of the adult scholarship, is currently attending the College of the North Atlantic in Clarenville where she is enrolled in the Web Site Administrator program. Ms. Williams was chosen for the award based on an interview that assessed initiative, need, and community and work experience.

Amy Edwards, daughter of Mark and Madeline Edwards, is the winner of an NLHC clients' children scholarship. She graduated from Holy Name of Mary Academy in Lawn with an average of 96.7 per cent in level III courses. Amy is currently doing her first year of studies at Memorial University in St. John's and is considering the Science Program.

Skylar Loder is the son of Walter and Sally Loder. Walter is a Maintenance Supervisor with NLHC's Marystown Regional Office. Skylar graduated from St. Lawrence Central High with an average of 89.63 per cent in level III courses. At present he is attending the College of the North Atlantic in Burin where he is enrolled in the Science Program. Skylar plans to pursue a career in Dentistry.

Winners of the adult client scholarships are selected based on an interview that assesses initiative, community and work experience, and need.

Winners of the clients' and employees' children scholarships are chosen based on their overall average in level III courses. Applicants must achieve a minimum average of 75 per cent in final year high school courses to be considered eligible.
