Minister congratulates new President of Federation of Canadian Municipalities Lloyd Matthews, Minister of Municipal and Provincial Affairs, congratulated Sam Synard, Deputy Mayor of Marystown and President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Municipalities, on being elected as the President of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities at their annual general meeting in Halifax over the weekend. Mr. Synard is the third Newfoundlander elected to the post and the first from rural Newfoundland. Mr. Matthews, who attended the conference in Halifax, said: "I sincerely congratulate Mr. Synard on his achievement. He has made a significant contribution to municipal government here in the province over the years. He has been instrumental in ensuring that a cooperative relationship be built between the province and the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Municipalities. Mr. Synard's 20 years of experience and dedication to local government in our province will prove to be a tremendous asset to him and the national organization as he leads the Federation of Canadian Municipalities into the next century."
