(Municipal and Provincial Affairs)

The Town of Glenwood has received approval to borrow $100,000 to undertake emergency repairs and an upgrade of its sewage treatment plant.

The announcement was made jointly today by Municipal and Provincial Affairs Minister Lloyd Matthews and Gander District MHA and Minister of Industry, Trade and Technology Sandra Kelly.

"This is a major repair and upgrade project for the plant, which should enable it to remain in full operation for at least five years," Minister Kelly said, adding that the project will rectify an immediate problem and protect the environment in general and the Gander River in particular.

"The town has undertaken a great deal of preparatory work on the treatment plant, and the financial approval will enable them to go forward with the major repairs as soon as possible," she said.

Minister Kelly noted that while the repairs to the plant are significant, she will continue to work towards a new sewage treatment plant to address the long-term needs of the towns of Glenwood and Appleton.
