Funding Continued for Regular Municipal Capital Works Program

Lloyd Matthews, Minister of Municipal and Provincial Affairs, announced today that $20 million will be available for the regular Municipal Capital Works Program. He said the program is designed to assist municipalities in the province requiring improvements or upgrading of municipal infrastructure such as water/sewer, solid waste management projects, and upgrading of roads. He said the delivery of this program illustrates government's commitment to developing infrastructure throughout the province.

Mr. Matthews said that the regular Municipal Capital Works Program is being maintained in addition to the new $100 million multi-year capital works program being introduced as part of this year's Budget. He said: "This is positive news for municipalities in the province. We can continue to assist municipalities with smaller infrastructure projects while at the same time providing assistance for large-scale development. The end result is an improved capability by municipalities to develop much-needed infrastructure across the province."

Mr. Matthews added that the capital works program is extremely important to municipalities. Infrastructure development has many benefits and contributes to employment generation as well as health and environmental improvements.
