Contract awarded for engineering and environmental
planning services for Churchill River Power Project

Roger Grimes, Minister of Mines and Energy, today announced that an estimated $300,000 contract has been awarded to a consortium of consultants Acres International, in association with Jacques Whitford/Genivar to assist with engineering and environmental planning work for the Churchill River Power Project.

The consultants will review recent environmental assessments and provide information for the development of a framework for work plans for upcoming engineering and environmental work. The contract has been awarded solely for this work, which will be completed in February 2000.

"We are pleased to see such a strong team pulled together to provide some of the environmental and engineering services needed in the months prior to an inter-utility MOU," said Roger Grimes, Minister of Mines and Energy. "We are committed to protecting the environment in both provinces and will ensure a thorough, integrated environmental assessment of the project involving federal and provincial governments and Innu groups."

Acres International, a recognized Canadian engineering firm, has a long history of engineering in Canada and overseas, including work on hydroelectric projects in Newfoundland and Labrador and Quebec. Acres offers a full range of energy project evaluation services, including system planning and economic and financial analysis and has provided services to the project over the past 14 months.

Jacques Whitford Environment Limited (JWEL) and Groupe-conseil Genivar formed a partnership earlier this year. Together they offer an in-depth understanding of environmental assessments of large-scale and hydroelectric projects under Newfoundland, Quebec and federal legislation. JWEL and Genivar have conducted work on the project over the past 14 months.
