Market Highlights:
Retail gasoline prices increased from 1.0 cpl to 5.0 cpl throughout the
province over the survey period and reflect increases in refinery wholesale prices over
the past several months. Since mid-February, retail prices in St. John's have increased by
10.0 cpl. By comparison, retail prices, on average, across Canada have increased by 11.5
cpl over this same period.
From June 22, 1999, to July 27, 1999, refinery wholesale prices, as
measured by the Montreal refinery rack price, had increased by 3.3 cpl and by a total of
11.1 cpl since mid-February.
Crude oil prices had increased from $17.61 US per barrel to $20.38 US
per barrel over the survey period. Since mid-February crude oil prices have increased by
over 70 per cent or the equivalent of 8.0 Canadian cpl.
