More companies benefiting from Mineral Exploration Program

Mines and Energy Minister Roger Grimes announced today more projects that are receiving funding under the new Mineral Exploration Program.

Under the Junior Company Exploration Assistance Program (JCEAP), five additional projects received funding, bringing the total to nine projects that have benefited from this initiative. The total amount of contributions is now at $623,000, with total project costs of more than $2.3 million.

The five projects are exploring in Glovers Harbor, Lush's Bight, Southeast of Buchans, and Springdale.

In addition, 26 new prospectors have received contributions under the expanded Prospectors Assistance Program, bringing the total to 80 prospectors receiving financial support. Of the $250,000 available under the program, approximately $206,000 has been allocated to prospectors.

"This is great news for the industry and certainly for those regions where the companies will be exploring. I wish these companies continued success in their exploration programs," said Mr. Grimes.

Mr. Grimes also noted that under the Prospectors Assistance Program, in cooperation with the Bay St. George Campus of the College of the North Atlantic, 26 students have successfully completed their prospectors training program earlier this month.

"The Mineral Exploration Program is helping to encourage and support mineral exploration in this province - exploration that is vital to further developments in mining in Newfoundland and Labrador," said Mr. Grimes.
