Minister provides supplementary information on the return to work by correctional officers

Justice Minster Paul Dicks provided further information on the return to work by the province's correctional officers. "Government has stood its ground by refusing to negotiate with the union until the correctional officers ended their strike," Mr. Dicks said. "We are pleased to see that the union has agreed to respect the court injunction issued by Judge Orsborn." The union has provided written confirmation of their intention to respect the court injunction.

Disciplinary action will be taken against members of the union. A suspension without pay for a period equal to double the period of time lost in terms of days/hours as a result of participation in the recent illegal strike activity will be imposed. The suspensions will not necessarily take effect immediately, rather they will be imposed at a time to be determined by the Department of Justice.

"The union has chosen to honour the collective agreement signed on July 9 this year. Once correctional officers have returned to work, government will be able to discuss their concerns within the parameters of the collective agreement."
