Department issues statement on recent escape from Her Majesty's Penitentiary

The two men who escaped from Her Majesty's Penitentiary yesterday were apprehended this morning and were scheduled to appear in court today to answer the charges surrounding their escape.

At this time officials from Her Majesty's Penitentiary and the Department of Justice are investigating the escape to identify and correct the factor or factors that contributed to its success. Use of the gymnasium has been discontinued for the time being, and additional security measures have been taken.

Until the investigation is completed, the Department of Justice is not prepared to speculate about the incident or the suggestion of NAPE representative Leo Puddester that the decision, taken several years ago to remove guards from the towers, must be reversed. However, it should be noted that escapes occurred when the towers were manned.
