$1.8 million for new Youth Remand Centre

Justice Minister Paul Dicks today announced $1.8 million for the construction of a new Youth Remand Centre. This facility will replace the existing Pleasantville Youth Centre.

The minister said government recognizes the importance of improving existing youth correctional facilities as well as the need to replace the Pleasantville facility, as was recommended in the 1996 Inkpen Report.

"The new centre will reflect government's commitment to continued improvement in how we house and treat young offenders in this province," said Minister Dicks.

The minister said site selection for the new Youth Remand Centre is ongoing and an announcement will be forthcoming.

The funding announced in today's budget is a continuation of money allocated for the new Youth Remand Centre. In 1998, government allocated $300,000 for the planning and design phase for the new facility.
