Minister comments on sudden death at Whitbourne
Justice minister Paul Dicks confirmed today that there was a sudden death of a male resident at the Whitbourne Youth Correctional Institute in the early morning hours of February 28, 1999.
The RCMP and the chief medical examiner are conducting an investigation, and no foul play is suspected in the death. As well, the Department of Justice is carrying out an internal investigation of the incident. With these investigations ongoing, it would be premature for the minister to comment on the details of the case.
A crisis management team is on site to provide support and counselling for the residents, and every reasonable effort is being made to ensure safety and security at the facility.
