Minister responds to arbitration board decision

Justice Minister Paul Dicks responded today to a decision of the arbitration board established under the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Act. On Friday, the board announced its recommendations regarding outstanding issues in collective agreement negotiations between the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Association (RNCA) and the provincial government.

Among issues addressed was a proposed salary increase. The board suggested a 14.55 per cent increase over a 42 month period for members of the RNCA.

"In accordance with the act, the Lieutenant Governor in Council must review the award and determine whether it is to be approved," Dicks said. "Thorough consideration must be given to all issues addressed in the award, particularly the suggested salary increase before any decision is made."

Minister Dicks noted that the proposed increase is more than twice the amount negotiated with more than 80 per cent of the provincial public sector employees who have concluded agreements.

The minister is confident that a decision on the arbitration board will be reached shortly after a cabinet review of the findings.
