Minister leading delegation on trade mission to Latin America

Industry, Trade and Technology Minister Sandra Kelly will lead a team of Newfoundland and Labrador businesses on a trade mission to Latin America from March 8 to 12.

The trade mission features a representation of Newfoundland and Labrador business and education sectors and includes INNOVA Multimedia, Computers and Communications, Superior Waterproof Coatings, Biomedical Implant Technologies, and Memorial University of Newfoundland.

"Over the past several years, Newfoundland and Labrador has participated in three successful trade missions to Latin America, including the Team Canada mission with Prime Minister Chretien in 1998," Minister Kelly said. "This mission will build upon the significant business contacts which have already been made, and will also introduce new Newfoundland and Labrador participants to a variety of Latin American business opportunities."

The minister noted that Latin America holds many opportunities for Newfoundland and Labrador companies, particularly in the areas of biomedical, environmental and information technology transfers, along with educational programs and software.

The Department of Industry, Trade and Technology has been working with a Latin American business consultant in advance of the trade mission to match businesses in Chile and Argentina with potential businesses and joint venture partners in Newfoundland and Labrador.

"As a result of previous trade missions to Latin America, Newfoundland and Labrador already has established business linkages with Chilean companies, while Argentina is seen as a significant area for new opportunities," the minister noted.

During the trade mission, Newfoundland and Labrador companies will participate in a number of one-on-one meetings with Latin American businesses. In addition, the delegation will visit education institutions, meet with the Chile Chamber of Commerce at a breakfast reception, and have a luncheon meeting with the Corporation del Commercia y de Production, the Chilean trade department.

Each of the business people taking part in the trade mission is responsible for their own transportation and accommodation costs.

"Companies throughout our province are becoming increasingly aware of the value of such trade missions, and the business opportunities that await them far beyond our shores," Minister Kelly said. "There's no question that Newfoundland and Labrador companies are export ready, and that our province has the goods, skills and services the rest of the world is seeking."
