Francophone women in the province honoured

Francophone women in Newfoundland and Labrador are among those who deserve recognition for their contributions to their communities and to the fabric of society as a whole Julie Bettney, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women said today.

Minister Bettney made her comments in light of this year's focus on Francophone Women as part of Women's History Month. Women's History Month in Canada was established in October 1992 to celebrate the vital contributions and achievements of a wide range of women in this country. This October, in light of 1999 being recognized as the Year of La Francophonie, Canadian Francophone women are being honoured for their role in developing the country.

"Francophone women in Newfoundland and Labrador have a long history of having worked hard to serve their communities, often with little or no recognition," Minister Bettney said. "It is a pleasure to be drawing attention to some of their achievements."

The minister noted the contributions of Lise Desrochers who has been recognized by the Francophone Association of Labrador for her community development work in that region, particularly in the area of education; Geraldine Barter of Mainland who has done extensive research on the French language on the Port au Port Peninsula and who helped organize the campaign that led to the opening of the first French first language school and community centre in the province 10 years ago; and, Mireille Thomas who has had a long history of playing a leadership role in organizations that serve the francophone community.

"These women are among many unsung heroines who have contributed to enhancing the diversity of this province by working to develop their communities," Minister Bettney said.
