Second consecutive decline in net out-migration levels

Human Resources and Employment Minister Julie Bettney said today that she is pleased to see the rate of net out-migration slowing for the second consecutive quarter. According to Statistics Canada figures released today, the fourth quarter of 1998 saw a substantial year-over-year decline in net out-migration levels. Interprovincial net out-migration totalled 934 in the fourth quarter of 1998, down 467, or 33 per cent from the 1997 fourth quarter level of 1401.

"This level is the lowest fourth quarter level since 1993, and most likely reflects the gains in employment which resulted from strong economic activity in the province in 1998," noted Minister Bettney. "With continued economic growth, we look forward to continued declines in net out-migration levels."

Minister Bettney noted that population continued to decline in 1998 even though net out-migration was lower than in 1997. This was because the natural population increase, which has been falling due to population aging and declining birth rates, was not able to offset the net migration.
