Nursing scholarships awarded

Joan Marie Aylward, Minister of Health and Community Services, today extended her congratulations to all of the scholarship and grant winners at the Association for Registered Nurses' (ARNN) Education and Research Trust ceremony held yesterday.

At the ceremony, $18,500 worth of scholarships and research grants was awarded to successful nursing candidates, including five Joyce M. Nevitt Gerontology Nursing Scholarships funded by the provincial Department of Health and Community Services worth a combined value of $2,500.

Minister Aylward said: "All of the scholarships awarded yesterday were presented to worthy candidates in the field of nursing. I am particularly happy that the Department of Health and Community Services is able to provide the gerontology nursing scholarships which not only recognize the hard work of the recipients, but also give recognition to Ms. Joyce Nevitt, a woman who contributed significantly to the field of nursing in our province."

Through the Joyce M. Nevitt Gerontology Nursing Scholarships, five registered nurses were each awarded $500 to pursue further studies in gerontology nursing. The successful candidates were:

• Michelle Whittle Mount Pearl

• Colleen Wyatt Glovertown

• Judy Peddle St. John's

• Rosalyn Lane Buchans

In May of this year, Minister Aylward announced the establishment of the Joyce. M. Nevitt Memorial Scholarship. Joyce Nevitt was the founder and first faculty member of the Memorial University School of Nursing. In addition to being an educator, Ms. Nevitt also worked as a clinical nurse, nursing administrator, nursing researcher, and a published author.
