Minister acknowledges September as National Muscular Dystrophy Awareness Month

Joan Marie Aylward, Minister of Health and Community Services, today acknowledged that September is National Muscular Dystrophy Awareness Month. The month provides the Newfoundland and Labrador office of the Muscular Dystrophy Association with an opportunity to inform the people of our province about neuromuscular disorders and what the association is doing to combat them.

The Muscular Dystrophy Association of Canada is a national voluntary agency, incorporated in 1954 by a group of parents and friends of children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. The group is committed to funding leading research to find the causes, treatment, prevention and cures for each of over 40 neuromuscular disorders. The disorders are marked by increasing muscle weakness and in many cases early death.

"I want to commend the many volunteers who work hard every year on behalf of the Muscular Dystrophy Association to help those suffering from MD to find a cure. Your work is indeed invaluable," said Minister Aylward.
