International Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Day, September 9

Joan Marie Aylward, Minister of Health and Community Services, today recognized Thursday, September 9, as International Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Day in Newfoundland and Labrador. The minister said: "Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is a community problem which is completely preventable so we have to find ways to work together as a community to help individuals, families, communities and society as a whole."

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) is a medical diagnosis that describes a pattern of physical and behavioural abnormalities that can affect a child born to a mother who drinks alcohol during her pregnancy. FAS is a life-long condition. A child with FAS becomes an adult with FAS.

The minister pointed to an interprovincial Fetal Alcohol Syndrome partnership of western provinces and suggested a similar type of partnership may be worthwhile in Atlantic Canada. Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta have a partnership which focuses on sharing information and pooling expertise and resources aimed at the prevention, intervention and management of FAS. "FAS is a problem experienced throughout our country, and a common regional approach may be the best way to help alleviate future cases and assist those currently managing FAS," said the minister. "I would like to explore this type of approach with the other Atlantic Health and Community Services ministers to look at best available options."

The minister pointed to a recent Strategic Social Plan demonstration project in Goose Bay as one example of trying to combat FAS. This project aims to create awareness and develop regional strategies to help families and helping professionals deal with FAS. She also noted that a one-day FAS awareness workshop is available at all Addictions Services offices across the Province and that pregnant women seeking addictions treatment are always given priority for services. The Department of Health and Community Services is also involved in the development of National Best Practices regarding the prevention, identification and intervention of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and other substance use during pregnancy.
