Fogo Island Hospital site announced

Premier Brian Tobin and Minister of Health and Community Services, Joan Marie Aylward, today confirmed government's commitment to constructing a new health facility on the island of Fogo by announcing the centre of the island as the chosen site of the new facility.

The site of the new hospital will enhance the centre of the island as it already houses Venture Academy, Fogo Island Senior High, the stadium, the RCMP station and other infrastructure.

The premier said it was time to move forward and get the new hospital construction underway. "We are committed to constructing a new health facility costing approximately $8 million to provide the best possible health services for all the people of Fogo Island. The approval of this project will enable the people of Fogo Island to replace the outdated facility they now have."

The minister said: "It is the responsibility of government to consider the views of residents and examine all the various issues. I am pleased that the new facility will add to an area which has been expanding for many years."

Gerry Reid, MHA - Twillingate and Fogo, said: "While the site selection decision was a contentious issue, it was felt this site will meet the needs of the majority of people on the island. The choice of sites were only seven kilometres apart and there were pros and cons related to each site. All of the people of the island will benefit as a result of this new modern facility which is designed to provide long term care, acute care, ambulatory care and community health services."
