BACKGROUNDER
Service and protection for the province's consumers

During the coming fiscal year, the strategic goals of the Department of Government Services and Lands will be to improve service quality, increase accessibility, and ensure public and consumer protection. The department will improve delivery of services through enhanced use of technology and by working in partnership with the private sector and other government departments.

The department's current fiscal plan enables it to move forward in improving service delivery and accessibility through such measures as the use of information technology. For example, one of the department's major initiatives is a new electronic Application Management and Licensing System (AMLS). This AMLS will improve tracking and processing of the department's large number of applications and permits. This will considerably improve service provided to business and the general public. The AMLS will also improve the monitoring of various inspection and enforcement functions within the department.

The Department of Government Services and Lands provides a wide range of services through its three branches:

  • Commercial and Corporate Affairs: regulation of financial industries; trade practices and consumer affairs; commercial registries; and residential tenancies;

  • Government Services: public safety; public health inspections and permits; environmental inspections and enforcement; and numerous other permitting and inspection services; Motor Registration; Vital Statistics; and

  • Lands: lands administration; land management; surveys and mapping.

The department has offices located throughout the province and many of its services are provided on a regional basis.
