Minister announces opening of two caribou zones in Labrador

Kevin Aylward, Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, has announced, the Orma North and the Michikamau West Zones are both open to caribou hunting effective immediately.

Minister Aylward said: "There have been several reports of caribou in the area which corroborates the distribution of satellite-collared animals in the two caribou extension zones. The movement of the George River Caribou Herd will continue to be monitored. Additional areas may open pending movements of the animals into these areas."

The primary caribou hunting zone in Labrador is the George River Zone which has a fixed date for opening and closing of the hunting season. Periodically, as the George River Caribou Herd moves south, smaller zones are opened to hunting. These zones are monitored carefully as not to effect the woodland caribou which are normally resident in the area.
