Possible late potato blight infestation

Kevin Aylward, Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, wishes to advise farmers, that due to warm, humid weather in recent weeks, conditions are favourable for the development of late blight in potatoes.

"Late blight has already been identified in two areas of the province, Shearstown and Codroy Valley," said Minister Aylward. "Farmers throughout the province should be on the lookout for this disease in their potato crop."

"Producers should scout their crop for early detection of late blight in order to take corrective action," Minister Aylward advised. "Potato blight can drastically reduce yield, increase operating expenses and reduce profits."

For further information, producers are requested to contact their nearest agricultural office, Newfoundland Crop Insurance Agency or visit the department's website at: www.gov.nl.ca/agric
